Aquaculture to boost Eastern Cape fishermen

A R25-million, government-backed fish farming project is due to get underway in the Eastern Cape where a site is being developed to stimulate fish farming along the Wild Coast.

The Herald reports that the strategy from government sees 10 aquaculture development zones (ADZ) being developed along the entire South African coastline. The lower ADZ will be situated at Qolora, just north of Kei River and focus on dusky kob and yellowtail production.

The Herald quotes Dr Motseki Hlatshwayo, acting chief director of aquaculture and economic development within the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as saying that at least four potential zones were identified for the Eastern Cape.

These are at East London, Coega, Hamburg and Qolora, where the environmental impact assessment has already been completed.
