Take stock of your communication skills

It is almost impossible to succeed if you cannot communicate effectively. In our formative education we are usually taught every topic under the sun, except for the most vital life skill: COMMUNICATION, writes communication guru John French, founder of Corporate Intelligence Training.

As a result, most people sadly tend to go through life handicapped by an inability to communicate effectively. On the other hand, successful communicators succeed in every aspect of their lives. No exceptions.

The following 10 critical key questions developed by John French of Corporate Intelligence Training will help you to calculate your present communication competency levels and assess where you present personal developmental areas lie. Each question has been carefully selected to cover each segment of successful communication:

Answer YES or NO:
1. Do you know how to create an engaging and dynamic communication presence in every professional situation?
2. Are you aware of what your personal communication strengths are and how to leverage them?
3. Do you have a strategy in place to work on your personal communication faults and areas for development?
4. How effective are you at managing your personal stress, both in immediate stressful situations, as well as in your life in general?
5. Have you learned how to master your vocal ability and control through personalised vocal coaching?
6. Are you able to read body language and send out the correct non-verbal signals in every communication situation?
7. Do you understand how your brain functions so that you can think on your feet without getting stressed or rehearsing beforehand?
8. Are you aware that Active Listening Skills are the key to successful information gathering and relationship-building?
9. Are you an expert at presenting, motivating, selling, negotiating, and building client relationships through both verbal and written media?
10. Have you developed your Emotional Intelligence so that you are able to manage your own emotions as well as the personalities and emotions of your various clients?
If you answered NO to any of the questions above, it confirms that you can learn, grow and develop in that particular communication skills area.

To conclude: Communication is a very broad field and encompasses personal mastery, Emotional Intelligence and a solid understanding of how the communication process works. We all need to learn how we can leverage our voices, bodies, emotions and brains to reach our full communication potential.
