SAE Institute launches film production scholarship

Internationally accredited SAE Institute in Cape Town has announced its latest scholarship opportunity for South Africans interested in learning film production at its campus in Woodstock.

The Hlubi Mboya Arnold Sunshine Cinema Scholarship will cover the full tuition fees for SAE’s full-time Higher Certificate in Film Production at the SAE Institute.

Hlubi is an award-winning film and television actress, social justice and civil rights activist, sponsored athlete, educator scholar and social entrepreneur. Hlubi, alongside Gareth Armstrong, also produces Future CEO’s on CliffCentral, assisting young, ambitious, up and coming, high-potential entrepreneurs and executives to grow their businesses and fast-track their careers. Sunshine Cinema is a solar-powered mobile cinema that converts solar energy into social impact.

To launch the scholarship, SAE and Hlubi, in partnership with Sunshine Cinemas, will be presenting a free evening masterclasses on 23 November 2017 at the Woodstock SAE Campus. This masterclass will provide the ideal opportunity for to learn new skills, pick up important tips and network with like-minded individuals.

This impact focused storytelling masterclass will cover the following topics:

  • Education for empowerment
  • Women and the SA entertainment industry
  • Storytelling and media advocacy
  • Alternative distribution

Sunshine Cinema is a solar powered mobile cinema that converts solar energy into social impact. We take compelling and carefully curated content to a diverse array of communities across Southern Africa and beyond.

Sunshine Cinema’s Sydelle Willow Smith explains further, “We are driven by a strong desire to create communal cinema experiences that act as a catalyst for dialogue, deep listening and ultimately positive social and environmental change. Sunshine Cinema isn’t just a mobile movie theater. We are an ethically-minded media company that produces films and virtual reality segments with meaningful messages. We are proud to be partnering with SAE to offer this scholarship, as we are firm believers in strengthening the local industry to ensure more diverse voices from the continent are heard."

This scholarship is just the latest to be announced, with other scholarship partnerships between SAE and well-known industry names including Ready D, AKA, Skrilllex and Black Coffee.

The scholarship is open to all South African citizens and all candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate. The scholarship is only valid for the July 2018 study intake. Candidates will be responsible for all living and travel expenses should they come from outside of Cape Town.

In order to apply for the scholarship, candidates must complete the application form, SAE will then send you a follow up e-mail detailing the next steps to complete your application.
