Career day aims to stimulate interest in mathematics

In an attempt to address the increasing lack of interest and steady declining numbers of learners who take up mathematics annually, the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) will be hosting its inaugural Maths Career Day - "My Digits, My Rhythm" Competition. The music talent show which is targeted at learners between Grades 8 and 12 is scheduled to take place during September 2012 in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Limpopo.

The event will consist of a music talent show and a maths quiz competition which will take place concurrently. Winners of both the talent show and maths quiz will be announced at the event.

Repositioning mathematics

The key objectives of the Maths Career Day initiative is to reposition mathematics as a 'cool' subject and at the same time encourage learners in both urban and rural areas to choose core maths in order to have better career choices. SAICA will also use the event to further profile exciting career opportunities that exist within the chartered accountant environment.

"SAICA has for years proven that existing deficiencies in the South African schooling system, especially in maths, science and accounting, can be overcome by identify young and underprivileged students who can be trained successfully as chartered accountants," said Willie Coates, senior marketing executive at SAICA.

To stand a chance to win great prizes and other exciting goodies learners are encouraged to visit the www.nowican.co.za website and register for the competition. The closing date is 14 September 2012.
