Dig this! Excavator dumped on Barberton farm

An excavator has been dumped at Gerrie Roets' farm in Mpumalanga and News24 reports that the Volvo, valued at more than R2m, has been left there for five months.

African Eye News Service says government contractors who were working on the Snymansbult dirt road that connects Barberton and Kaapsehoop were using the 30-ton machine. Roets says the road is now in worst condition than it was when work started.

He says that he has had to spend R100 000 on his truck because of the appalling road conditions. A private contractor was using the government equipment.

Department of Public Works' spokesman David Nkambule denied that the excavator had been abandoned and the following day a technician was sent to the farm to collect it but Roets' wife Anelette refused to let him do so, demanding that the road must first be repaired.
