Cape Town's egg man in Guinness World Record attempt

Cape Town's egg man, Gregory da Silva, whose egg headdress consists of thousands of egg shells as well as African symbols, is going to Italy to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest egg hat.

Da Silva is a comedian, artist, storyteller, dancer and live street performer from Benin, West Africa who has made Cape Town his home over the last few years, performing every day at Cape Town's Green Market Square.

His headdress normally weighs up to 25kg, but for this particular record-breaking competition it will be made of 10 000 fresh eggs. Da Silva flies to Italy on 11 March.

CEO of Cape Town Tourism, Mariette du Toit-Helmbold said: "The egg man is a Cape Town attraction in his own right. Cape Town Tourism gives wholehearted support for Gregory's trip to Italy and we wish him all the best in his endeavours to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest egg hat. We applaud and appreciate the work he is doing to represent the Mother City and we look forward to his return whether with the award in hand or just knowing that, as always, he has been one of our finest ambassadors. Cape Town - hold thumbs!"
