Catch Trainspotting on the big screen for free
Trainspotting is an undeniably dark and difficult film that deals with extreme issues in a shocking yet humorous way.
Mark "Rentboy" Renton (Ewan McGregor) is a young man with few prospects and fewer ambitions, who lives in economically depressed Edinburgh. Like most of his friends, Renton is a heroin addict whose life is dedicated to finding the next score. Renton's two best friends Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), a snappy dresser obsessed with James Bond, and Spud (Ewan Bremner), a guileless nerd, are also junkies. Renton and his pals also hang out with Begbie (Robert Carlyle), a borderline psychotic who loathes junkies even though he drinks like a fish.
The film has been recognised by the British Film Institute (BFI) as one of the Top 100 British films of all time, being ranked in 10th place, and was the highest-grossing British film of 1996. At the time it was the fourth highest grossing British film in history. The film has consistently rated high amongst film buffs and critics; it is truly a contemporary classic.
"At TCM, we love great film, be it a gritty noir classic, a ground breaking sci-fi, or romance that still makes your heart beat faster, we aim to screen those films that have stood the test of time in living rooms across South Africa. With the TCM Presents initiative, we get to bring excellent films like Trainspotting back to their natural habitat - the silver screen," says Tal Hewitt, VP and general manager of Turner Broadcasting Systems for Turkey, Middle East and Africa.
