SABC - R1,4-billion misused or stolen

The Special Investigating Unit has found that R1,4-billion has been lost or misused by the South African Broadcasting Corporation according to an article published in Business Day.

The SABC is currently asking the government - and therefore taxpayers - to bail it out by providing additional funds to keep it afloat. According to the SIU, six cases concerning the public broadcaster have been referred to the National Prosecuting Authority for possible prosecution.

Business Day says the probe covers the period from January 2005 to October last year and, among other things, shows that R1,2-billion was paid to 20 employees with business interests in companies that did business with the broadcaster.

At least R2,7-million was spent on petrol cards held by just 11 employees and that R150-million was spent on buying content that was never aired by the SABC. At least R47-million was paid in commissions to staff from the commercial enterprises division between April 2008 and March last year.

At least R12,8-million was paid to 51 suspended employees.
