Werewolves, vampires and witches, oh my!

In the mood for some scary Friday Halloween partying and howling at the moon we headed off to the Assembly for the Van Coke Kartel album launch with support from fellow band aKing. It seemed to be a rather subdued Halloweens in Cape Town this year and the Assembly was definitely looking the best bet and luckily didn't disappoint.

The venue was decked out in its scary finest including many cobwebs and a stage adorned with jack o' lanterns and deformed toy babies and teddy bears. The attendees were just as decked out; corpse brides danced with Kiss look a likes while pretty men in dresses played foosball with werewolves.

The bands themselves didn't skimp on costumes and both aKing and Van Coke Kartel seemed like they had got a little crazy on the black face paint. aKing put on a tight set playing some easy to sing and dance along songs. This was my third time seeing them but first time seeing them up close and I was quite impressed by their sound and stage presence which can be easily missed at those big- many band festivals.

After a short break Van Coke Kartel took to the stage. The crowd was hungry for blood and the band seemed happy to deliver. The energy was as hyped as ever as it is when Francois and Wynand are on stage. Wynand was even playing a very nice looking double bass to fit the mood, unfortunately the sound got a bit lost amongst all the other noise but it certainly looked great. Though I would have liked to see him attempt one of his signature scissor kicks with that.

The band was launching their new album Waaksaam & Wakker. As not being very Afrikaans savvy perhaps I missed some of the more subtle differences between Van Coke Kartel and Fokofpolisiekar (besides being minus a few members and with a different drummer) but to me they sound pretty much the same, can't deny though that the songs they played off their album were baie waaksaam & wakker.

Having satisfied all Halloween urges it was time to head home before sunrise.
