Sibikwa Theatre Project appoints new artistic director

Jaco van Wyk has been appointed the new artistic director of Sibikwa. The Sibikwa Community Theatre Project was formed in 1988 to bring theatre to the disadvantaged community around Benoni in Gauteng and mine the buried talent of the people living in these communities to create sophisticated and exciting productions.

Van Wyk will be taking over from Phyllis Klotz and Smal Ndaba, who founded Sibikwa. Sibikwa will be restructured and led by the artistic director, who will be supported by a business manager.

Young actors will get exposure

Van Wyk's CV includes his skills as an educator, as well as his love of the theatrical arts. He has twenty years of acting and directing behind him, has taught at two private schools, Crawford College and Reddam House College, and was the head of the Drama Department at the National School of the Arts.

"My training and experience as an actor, ballet and contemporary dancer and choreographer greatly contributes to an informed opinion on directing and choreographic styles and trends. Given this background, young actors under my guidance have always been exposed to and involved in productions and showcases in a variety of styles ranging from realism to experimental theatre," he said.
