Non-verbal communication with Body Language

I'm not sure whether to say I was thoroughly entertained or thoroughly educated, or perhaps it was simply the perfect combination of both. Gaetan Schmid has performed many times at the Kalk Bay Theatre, with shows such as The Dog's Bollocks and Rumpsteak. He has now taken the world of non-verbal communication and made it a humorous learning experience for everyone who had the privilege of seeing the show.
Non-verbal communication with Body Language

Not only does Gaeten perform Body Language, but he also wrote it and does the sound and lighting; impossible you may think, but trust me he does. His energy and stage presence is something one rarely has the opportunity to see and, once again, with the intimate setting of the Kalk Bay Theatre it enhances the experience for every audience member.

The Queen and Hitler

So, of course, I don't want to give away anything because it is honestly something you have to see for yourself to really get the full impact. However, he mentions: the Queen, Hitler, Mr Bean, Kangaroos, Hamsters and mum. How would these ever be in a show about Body Language you may ask. Well there is only one way to find out.

As with many comedians, not only is Gaeten incredibly funny, but he is also very intelligent and, after speaking to him, I found out that the idea for the show actually came from his studying days. A lot of his studies focused on observing people around you and then one day he found a book about Body Language and the rest, as they say, is history. He has been in South Africa for 12 years and, at the age of 41, says that although it isn't his first language he doesn't find it difficult to perform his show in English.

What's in the future?

So what is in the future for this masterpiece? It will be running at the Kalk Bay Theatre and then, from there, it will move on to the Arena at the National Arts Festival. Gaeten also mentioned that he aims to do the show for four years, but will see what happens in the meantime.

But before you jump onto getting tickets, a word of warning - don't take youngsters as it is quite an adult show. Also make sure your cheeks are ready to be stretched into a smile for about an hour.

Body Language is running at the Kalk Bay Theatre till the 28 May, Wednesday to Saturday at 20h30.

Tickets cost R110. Age Advisory 16 Language. Guests can also enjoy a pre-show supper at the Kalk Bay Theatre Café. For bookings contact 073 220 5430 or visit www.kbt.co.za.
