Original Riverdance coming to SA

In early 2011 the Riverdance Irish Dance Troupe and an array of talent from Spain, Russia and America will be appearing at The Teatro at Montecasino, Joburg from 25 January to 6 February and Cape Town's Grand Arena, GrandWest Casino from 24 February to 27 February, 2011.

"This show is a mammoth not-to-be-missed entertainment experience, which we are proud to stage in South Africa for the first time. During the past 10 years, local audiences had the opportunity to see other Irish dance-styled shows, but never before have they seen Riverdance, the original and probably the most successful show of its kind to come out of Ireland in recent times," said Attie van Wyk, CEO of BIG Concerts International. "The unbelievable precision of the dancers' footwork is a sight to behold," he added.

Riverdance is a blend of dance, music and song. Drawing on Irish traditions, the combined talents of the performers propel Irish dancing and music into present day. The fusion of Irish dancing with such diverse dance styles as Flamenco, American tap and Russian folk dancing captures the imagination of audiences across all ages and cultures.

Life of a river

Riverdance is the development of an original idea (tracing the life of a river) by Moya Doherty, which was initially performed at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Dublin in April 1994 as a seven-minute interval act. With music and lyrics by Bill Whelan, Moya Doherty went on to produce the show, which is directed by John McColgan. A short interval act blossomed into a worldwide box office smash hit.
