Call to help young Legends

Over 70 of Cape Town's children will be taking part in the production Legends at the Artscape Theatre, in order to raise funds for the Western Cape Street Childrens Forum. Sponsors, however, are badly needed in order to cover costs.

The event is the brainchild of 14-year-old producers, Siobhan Adams and Aviva Lerer. Ably assisted by a committed and enthusiastic team of fellow teenagers: Gabriel Cumpsty (stage manager), Kate Upsher (technical), Warren Bright (photographer), Giselle Cowdrey (set design), Emma Blencowe (wardrobe) and Ashley Wilton (choreographer).

Thought-provoking performance

The production, set to take place on 25 August, 2010, will showcase songs by musical legends such as Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson, performed and choreographed by the children themselves. In an effort to raise awareness of the homeless children issue, the production takes us on a journey through the mind of an adolescent who feels that life on the streets would be preferable to being in a home environment, where abuse and neglect are the order of the day. In holding faith in themselves and each other, the children remind us all, young and old, that our destinies are truly in our own hands. Proving that we are never too old to learn, these youngsters teach us that true freedom comes from learning to stand up for ourselves and each other, not by running away from home. This thought-provoking performance brings home the message that life on the streets is not the answer.

In an age in which drugs, gangs and unwanted pregnancies saturate teenage culture, this refreshing viewpoint stands as a beacon of shining hope that the future is in safe hands. We can stand proud and confident that tomorrow's leaders are ready, able and willing to stand up to the challenge and tackle the issues that present themselves.

Sponsorship

In order to ensure that all proceeds raised from ticket and programme sales go to the Western Cape Street Childrens' Forum, the children need to raise funds to cover the costs of equipment hire, costumes, props and printing and also to pay for rehearsal venues. Please help these children to realise their dream of making a difference. Funds can be deposited directly into the dedicated Legends bank account. All sponsors will be credited in the programme and audited financials will be available after the event. Please help by contacting or +27 (0)79 103 6326 for banking details.

This event is in line with the Central City Improvement District's Give Responsibly Campaign, which encourages us not to give money to beggars on the streets. The children wish to thank directors and staff at The Artscape Theatre for assisting them to bring this dream to fruition.
