Who should feature in Survivor SA: Celebs?

Survivor SA I and II didn't quite make the grade in a country that is brimming with reality TV fanatics. But we're such a colourful bunch, so I don't understand why the shows lacked intrigue, drama and appeal. Well M-Net's taking a third swing at it by shooting a Survivor series featuring SA celebs as contestants. And it's no secret that South Africans thrive on celeb gossip - ask any respectable tabloid or celebrity gossip/entertainment magazine.

Generalising that most experience a strong sense of schadenfreude when it comes to the downfall of the glamorously famous, this show has the potential to do really well. We know the producers have to have a good all-round selection of characters, including the funny, the smart, the arrogant, the drama queen, the sneaky, the athletic, the sweet, but most importantly, the super hot hunks and the sexy babes. Sex sells, deal with it.

    Marc Lottering

Fantasy list of SA Survivor celebs:

    • Marc Lottering - He's funny and he has interesting hair. Plus he's got a dual personality, so we get two for the price of one with aunty Mearle Abrahams coming out to visit once in a while.
    • Jeremy Maggs - After hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, the man must be a genius by now! He'll be our Mr Smarty Pants.
    • Julius Malema - Mr "Hermaphrodite, what is that? Somebody tell me, what is hermaphrodite in Pedi?” definitely gets a spot - no one entertains better than the ANCYL president. I wonder if he would be the first to go or if the others would keep him around just for kicks.
    • Natalie Becker - She's not just super hot, she's also super smart with a BSocScience degree from UCT.

      Khanyi Mbau
      Khanyi Mbau

    • Khanyi Mbau will be the drama queen - fired from Muvhango, considered in some circles a gold digger - you want drama, here's your drama right here.
    • The trouble with hot guys is that they seem to lack personality in these shows, so I'm going to have to go with Aidan Bennetts, Top Billing's DIY handyman. They're gonna need someone to set up camp and maintain those odds and ends.
    • Herschelle Gibbs - He's the naughty schoolboy type who's bound to have a few shenanigans up his sleeve - plus, he may carry a little somethin' special along to make things interesting among contestants. They may see things in a whole new light perhaps?
    • We've got some great South African athletes, so there's plenty to choose from. But, the most interesting of late has been our dear Caster Semenya. She's been making headlines since winning the 800 metres at the 2009 World Championships in athletics, and I'm sure she'll be making plenty more competing to be the ultimate survivor.

      Francois van Coke
      Francois van Coke

    • Francois van Coke - Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel's front man. Can you say controversy?! Imagine him trying to stage-dive from a rock onto his teammates after winning a challenge! The producers will definitely have a PG16 season for language on their hands.
    • Debra Patta has to make an appearance - someone to stir the pot and start some heated debate. Patta will eat them alive!

So that's my Top-10 Fantasy Survivor SA Celeb contestants, but there's so many more who deserve a spot including Patricia Lewis, Evita Bezuidenhout, Makhaya Ntini, Mahendra Raghunath, Os du Randt, Pam Andrews, Robert Whitehead etc etc.

    Snodgrass to host

    Paul Snodgrass
    Paul Snodgrass

Remember Mark Bayley - Mr Bland himself - well, he's apparently not making a comeback due to some reason or the other (who could be bothered really?). The perfect host for the Fantasy Survivor contestants would have to be, Paul Snodgrass. This loud and proud bloke is full of energy and is bound to get on someone's nerves eventually. He's worked almost every major rock fest in SA and he just doesn't seem to run out of steam. What's your secret then Paul? Either way, he'll keep them on their toes.

It's not all about schlebs and plebs really; this season is for the poor and needy. The longer each contestant survives on the remote island, which is said to be somewhere in the Indian Ocean, the more money they win for a charity of their choice.

Survivor South Africa III will be screened at the end of January 2010. Casting is currently in progress and any models, musicians, actors and television presenters interested in participating should send an email to .
