Travel South Africa

Local National Geographic Traveller launched

National Geographic Traveller, has been launched in South Africa by 8 Ink Media. The magazine will be published quarterly and is on sale now. National Geographic Traveller South Africa, like its international counterpart, claims to present the best of independent travel writing and an authoritative passport to local and international destinations.

“The excellent reader response to pilot issues gave us the confidence to launch National Geographic Traveller South Africa as an ongoing and dedicated title,” said publisher Kelda Lund of 8 Ink Media (which also publishes National Geographic Kids in South Africa).

Local and international content

“We believe that the success lies in the mixture of local and international content with splendid visual appeal. The 'All Travel, All The time' pay-off line resonates with those for whom travel - or dreams of travelling - is a daily life experience. By extension, the magazine will go to the ends of the Earth to bring authentic, fulfilling travel experiences to the reader.”

Along with features that present a new twist on the road well trodden, National Geographic Traveller goes off the beaten track, identifies travel trends (such as slow, green and experiential travel) and provides insider travel tips.

The explorer in us

National Geographic Traveller South Africa is aimed at the ‘explorer' in all of us and as such is geared towards helping our readers make informed, intelligent and exciting travel decisions,” said the magazine's editor, Kerryn Fischer. Covering a broad range of destinations, from adventure to ecotourism to luxury epics that take in the world's best five-star destinations and hotels, the uniqueness of National Geographic Traveller lies in its ability to ‘discover a sense of place' in every destination covered.

Editorially National Geographic Traveller South Africa will continue to strike a balance between international and local features and, like the US edition, give equal weight to concise information and tips, and descriptive content.

Strong visual impact

In addition, glorious photography enhances the magazine's glossy yet clean look.

“The magazine is strong in its visual impact and photography plays an important role in telling the story,” added Kerryn Fischer. “Allied to this is a refreshing, first-person style which is in keeping with the notion that ours is a wonderful, albeit fragile, world that can be appreciated all the more through travel. All of this comes with the authoritative edge of its National Geographic heritage.”

The cover story of the latest edition is on Brazil's 8000-km beach. Other stories look at 20 budget SA bush breaks, a gastronomic guide to Sydney, authentic Tokyo, star-gazing safaris in the Cederberg, 48 hours in Athens, the new Beirut and cutting loose in provincial Provence.
