While the various cricket boards are yet to decide on playing hours and agree on a brand and colour of ball that can be seen under lights, players, spectators, administrators and media networks are excited at the prospect of - for example - having the Ashes cricket series played under lights.
There are obstacles - crucially, cricket authorities have not reached consensus on a ball - but Channel Nine's enthusiastic backing will add commercial momentum. ''I think it's exciting,'' the network's head of sport, Steve Crawley said. ''I have always thought it's only a matter of time. I can't see a downside to it from an entertainment point of view." Crawley added that the coming test match against South Africa in Brisbane comes at a time of year "when so many people are at work during the day, and night-time cricket would give us a bigger audience.''
Crawley told The Sydney Morning Herald he expected traditionalists to resist the concept, ''but I also salivate at the thought of having Test cricket at night''.
