Rainbow Bridge gallops away with the win at the 2019 Sun Met

The 2019 Sun Met was held at the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on 26 January 2019. Hundreds fashionistas alongside local and international celebrities such as Linda Mtoba, Somizi Mhlongo, Tamaryn Green, Chad Le Clos, Boity Thulo and Olympic medallist Usain Bolt were in attendance for Africa's 'richest race day'.

The 135th edition of the Sun Met saw Oh Susanna back to defend her 2018 title but at the end of the day, it was Rainbow Bridge ridden by jockey Anton Marcus, who galloped away with the win in the R5m Grade 1 Sun Met.

This year’s theme “African Luxury: Precious Metals” was a celebration of the continent’s rich mineral resources and it did not disappoint as the racecourse lit up as the Cape’s most dazzling runway with racegoers dressed to the theme in metallics, golds, platinum, and copper colours and textures.

The official designers of the 2019 Sun Met, Warrick Gautier, Imprint ZA, Biji La Maison, and House of Ole brought the theme to life with their showstopper creations at fashion shows in the Sun Met entertainment marquee leading up to the esteemed best-dressed competition.

This year’s Best Dressed Woman was awarded to Mala Bryan who walked away with the title for the second consecutive year. The Best Dressed Man honour was awarded to Jody Alexander who donned a dashing suit with gold detail. Both walked away with prizes to the value of R50,000. The judges for the Best Dressed Competition included Precious the Planner, Miss South Africa, Tamaryn Green, Heart FM Radio DJ Suga and actress Linda Mtoba.

Rob Collins, group chief strategy and operations officer at Sun International said: “The Sun Met celebrated with G.H. Mumm is one of the most revered fashion and equestrian events on Africa’s social calendar; it is the coming together of fashion, entertainment, and exhilarating racing on a world-class level and it’s been a thrill for Sun International in our third year running.”
