Q&A with RJSA, Ronnie tells all

American rock band Red Jump Suit Apparatus will be making their South African debut as the headline act at both the Cape Town and Joburg Synergy Live festivals this year. We chatted to singer Ronnie Winter who, among other things, set the record straight about their Cokefest no show back in 2009.

BizcommunityThis your first time performing in South Africa, right?

Ronnie Winter: Yes, officially our first time. We were supposed to play the Coke Fest back in 2009 and our label goofed up, so we decided a year after that to do everything on our own.

Are you looking forward to Synergy Live, what can we expect at your performance?

We're gonna play RJSA tracks nice and loud.

Q&A with RJSA, Ronnie tells all

Will you be playing any songs from your forthcoming album?

Nothing from our upcoming album, that is still to be released, but some stuff from our newer EP and also some old stuff from our first record, 'cause we never got a chance to play that back in the day, so we'll make sure that everybody gets the chance to hear that.

Are you going to be in SA for some time? Any plans to do some sightseeing?

Yeah, we're there for about four or five days so we definitely don't want to sit in our hotel the whole time. We'll do our best to get out and about and try to see some sights.

How has the world tour been so far you're just busy in Australia now, right?

Yeah, the first half of Australia is done and our next three shows have already sold out, so that's awesome. Before that was Russia and that was killer, and then the US and the UK before that. So it's been a long run and we're going to finish the world tour in South Africa, so that's a good way to do it.

Of all the places you've played so far, which town gave you the best response?

We do really well in south-east Asia, Singapore was probably my favourite show, also The Philippines. Every place is different. Moscow is also really awesome. You know with a lot of those places we never even put a record out, so it's really cool to show up there and there thousands of people singing our songs. So we're just grateful we have fans all over the world.

Can you tell us more about the forthcoming album? What can we expect?

Well, we tested the waters with our most recent EP; we went back to our old producer David Bendeth who did our first record, and we consider that one of our best records, so we tested it out to see if we still had the old magic, which obviously we do. So we went back to Dave to make a full-length record. So if you're expecting it to have a certain sound it's not only gonna be like the old stuff, it's gonna have a throwback vibe, but we're a lot older now. I'm 30 years old, so I'm not happy about writing about the same things, but sonically it's gonna sound very similar to the first record.

If you had to characterise RJSA as an animal what would it be and why?

Wow, I have never been asked that. Gosh, I think like a radical shark, do you guys know or remember a show called Street Sharks? It was these skateboarding sharks. So yeah we would be a Street Shark.

Any messages you would like to give to your fans in South Africa?

Yeah. I would like to tell the truth, we're sorry we didn't make it there before, it wasn't our fault and now were coming and we're glad people still believe in us and still listen to our music. We're looking forward to coming there and rocking down so we hope you make it to the show, but if not it sucks for you.
