Pro Helvetia calls for funding applications

Pro Helvetia Johannesburg, the Swiss Arts Council, has announced a further call for applications for art funding. The funding is made available in partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation (SDC) and it is aimed at assisting in the distribution of works to a broader southern African audience.
Pro Helvetia calls for funding applications

Projects in dance, theatre, music and visual arts that provide increased public exposure of high quality contemporary work across national borders (e.g. presentation of a South African work in Zimbabwe) will be considered. Priority countries are South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, but motivations for opportunities in other SADC countries will be considered.

The funding is designed to accommodate support of on average R35,000, with a maximum of R50,000 depending on the number of artists involved.

Deadline for receipt of applications is 2 May 2013.

Criteria:

1. Approximately 6 projects will be funded per call.

2. As the objective for this funding is to support the mobility of performances and distribution of exhibitions, applying artists should have letters of expression of interest from the host or venue. Applying programmers / hosts should in turn have letters of acceptance from artists/organisations they have invited.

3. Applicants are encouraged to describe how their project/performance will contribute to the increase of capacity of partners by strengthening networks and creating links. While the emphasis is on performance and exhibition, emerging opportunities for mutual exchange and collaboration will be indicated.

Pro Helvetia's overall objective with this funding is to contribute to the development of a strong, independent, well-networked and organized and high quality arts sector in the region, which manages to create livelihoods for innovative young professional artists, who create a role for the professional arts in providing an independent voice in society.

High-quality projects are therefore sought that can effectively partner with Pro Helvetia towards making this vision a reality.

4. Applicants are requested to download the application form from www.prohelvetia.org.za. Completed applications should be sent to az.gro.aitevlehorp@snoitacinummoc.

5. As the amount available for this funding is modest, applicants are requested to submit their budget with the following line items included:

  • Per diems (no more than R200 per day per person)
  • Travel
  • Accommodation (limited to R500 per person)
  • Insurance
  • Some transport / technical production costs

Any other line items (e.g. promotion, artists' fees) will only exceptionally be considered for funding through this call, a decision which is to be made by the jury when these costs are also included in the requested budget. The final amount awarded will depend on the individual needs of the project.

Indication should be given about part-funding that might be available from other sources, as well as any contributions in kind that might be as a result of the partnership/relationship with the host/receiving organisation.
