Ours Was Dawn at the Artscape

“Ours Was Dawn”, a musically-driven play from acclaimed play-write Monde Wani, runs at the Artscape from April 25-May 2 and celebrates the triumph of humanity in the new South Africa. First commissioned by the University of St John's & St Benedict in Minneapolis, USA, for performances during Martin Luther Week in 2008, “Ours Was Dawn” is a two-hander starring husband and wife actors Monde and Nomsa Wani.

Apart from her work on stage, Nomsa Wani is also a recording gospel artist.

The play tells the engaging story of the New South Africa as it tracks the life journey of two characters who have stayed in a shack for a extensive period of time and are about to receive a house.

Through powerful story-telling, acting and singing, the characters share with the audience the story of their lives, how they met, their hopes during the first vote, their struggles and the challenge faced by a traditional husband in a complex new world.

Largely in English with some Xhosa, since it was performed in Minneapolis “Ours Was Dawn” has received rave reviews at, amongst others, last year's National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

The Artscape is bringing “Ours Was Dawn” to Cape Town for its premier performance in the city.

“The show speaks to the new South Africa. It's about seeking the positive and the light in our often complex and confusing struggle towards personal liberation,” says play-write-director Monde Wani.

“There are great, positive experiences we all are growing through - it's just that we don't often see the amazing, everyday miracles along the way,” adds Monde.

Having just returned from London where he participated in the International Workshop Festival, Monde Wani is an experienced actor and storyteller who has created productions that have toured the world. His one-man play, “Rivonia Trial”, has performed in a number of countries including the USA, UK and Germany.

Monde also played the lead role in the musical production “Elephant”, a collaborative effort between artists from South Africa and Newcastle, England.

Tickets for the limited run of “Ours Was Dawn” can be booked at Computicket or Artscape Dial-A-Seat 021-421.7695.
