SA Tourism pays tribute to Mama Africa

South African Tourism has expressed deep sadness at the passing on the weekend of singer Miriam Makeba. CEO Moeketsi Mosola paid tribute to Mama Africa (as she was affectionately known the world over) for her grace, her generosity and for the invaluable contribution she made, both to the fight for freedom in South Africa and to establishing globally the soul-lifting and joyous music of this continent.

“Miriam Makeba is a legend. She shone brightly in a firmament of international stars and it was thanks, largely, to her dedication, talent and energy that South African music found a foothold in the world, and is celebrated today as a genre, as an integral part of an optimistic lifestyle and as a reflection of the vibrant, passionate and rhythm-filled culture of a nation and a continent.”

She was a legend, he said, and was one of SA's greatest ambassadors.

“We will all miss her. We celebrate her life and we are grateful for her legacy both as a performer, and as a great daughter of South Africa.”
