Joburg Tourism Company condemns xenophobic violence

Johannesburg can ill afford the current wave of xenophobic violence sweeping the country, says the chief executive of the Johannesburg Tourism Company (JTC), Lindiwe Mahlangu, as people from African countries make a significant contribution to the economy of Johannesburg through trade and commerce, job creation and tourism spending.

She says the city has made concerted efforts to enhance its position as a global destination for business and tourism, and as a home for foreign citizens. “All law-abiding people are welcome in our city as they have a role to play in our progress and prosperity, and ultimately improve on their own quality of life.”

Extensive cooperation

The city plays host to millions of visitors annually and the JTC manages this process through extensive cooperation with all relevant safety and security authorities. “Visitors to our popular tourist attractions, venues, exhibitions, cultural and sporting events, and conference facilities should be assured that we condemn the current events and support all efforts aimed at bringing an end to the temporary conflict,” says Mahlangu.

“We will sustain a position of ‘business as usual' and we are communicating with international agencies and business centres, assuring them that the incidences are isolated and contained within a few areas of our city and advising on measures to ensure visitors' safety.”

Mahlangu says the contribution towards the local economy generated by tourists from Africa is significant, as this trade strengthens the continental economy and places Africa on the global map with new dimensions and respect. Johannesburg relies heavily on business partnerships generated through the city's conferences and exhibitions.

"Contribute towards local job creation"

“There are many African nationals working in our city on special assignments, created by such events and these efforts contribute towards local job creation and poverty alleviation. Johannesburg welcomes a wide variety of visitors, those who are travelling here for business or pleasure or those who are here to receive medical treatment. This also includes those attracted to the opportunities afforded to them within the economic hub of South Africa.”

“As a city we want to be instrumental in the way forward through leadership and a focus on finding solutions to the situation at hand. Although we are not a law-enforcement agency, we understand and promote a peaceful and tolerant society. At JTC we believe that through strong measures of communication we can work together with tourism stakeholders and play a pivotal role in restoring global confidence,” concludes Mahlangu.
