Absa reach out and touch the youth at Surge events

Having just come out tops in the banking sector of the Generation Next youth brand survey, ABSA aim to cement that perception and have signed up as a headline sponsor for the Surge - Branding the teen spirit events.

The events will take place in Pretoria from 01 to 04 October and in Cape Town 10 to 13 December during the school holidays and aims to entertain and educate teenagers.

“We recognise that the youth want interaction - to be inspired and entertained; they want to have a sense of being connected with their peers and with their brands. Surge - Branding the teen spirit gives us the opportunity to interact with the future market of this country,” says Kaibe Mollo, Head: Marketing Retail Bank. “Young consumers want to have an individual experience and Surge has been designed with this in mind. Adding value is of utmost importance when targeting this segment of the market and ABSA aims to do this through our alliance with Surge.”

This event and interactive expo is the only one of its kind taking place in South Africa and will keep teenagers busy in a safe and secure environment. The entertainment programme includes bands, DJ's, comedy, an extreme park with MotoX, skateboarding, BMX's, etc, competitions, gaming, sports, movies, fashion shows, make-overs, goody bags, chill areas, art, sculpture exhibitions, graffiti walls plus much more.

With loads to try and buy, Surge will also be a one stop shop for Christmas and end of year gifts. Products on sale will include scooters, skating products, gaming consoles, games, gadgets, clothing, accessories, sports and leisure equipment, health and beauty products as well as loads of food and beverage stalls.

The ‘parent pit' will provide a welcome refuge for parents to chill and listen to talks while their teenagers are off having fun. Topics to be covered include: Understanding Facebook and protecting your child on the internet, what is MXit, watching for signs of substance abuse, banking products for the youth, further education - what's available, skin and health care for teenagers, etc.

“There is definitely a gap in the market place for this kind of event and we are proud to be part of a concept where we will be able to interact with this very important sector of the market. Surge presents us with an opportunity to stay ahead with the youth by networking with them individually and thereby understanding their needs,” says Mollo.
