Green wedding gifts online
The Silver Ribbon Online Bridal Registry is offering 'green' alternatives as wedding gifts. These include owl boxes, bat boxes, barbet logs and an option for donations to Bushbaby SOS. Large indigenous trees will soon be available for gift registries.
"Giving a bat or an owl a home is a wonderful way of helping to protect your immediate environment, making sure that your wedding guests leave a legacy far beyond a set of crockery or cutlery," says owner, Sharon Richards-Lund.
Owl boxes are becoming more popular with the realisation that breeding sites are in short supply, particularly for the Spotted Eagle Owls and Barn Owls which live and breed within the green belts of many suburbs in South Africa. Each owl box takes about 45 minutes to an hour to install and an annual maintenance visit is required to re-varnish, replace pea gravel, check for signs of wear and monitor occupancy.
