The business of empowering trust

Today's Trustee, a monthly publication for employee-elected retirement-fund trustees, was launched in Sandton, last week. The magazine's target audience is the 'new generation' trustees now empowered by law to influence the placement of some R1.3 trillion in retirement-fund assets.

The publication will be distributed to over 11 000 trustees. The publishers are Zanusi Investments, a private company whose joint shareholders are executive directors, Nomahlubi Mayatula-Simamane (managing) and Allan Greenblo (editorial).

Explains Today's Trustee managing director Nomahlubi Mayatula-Simamane, "We will explore topical issues relevant to trustees such as the use and abuse of retirement funds for purported empowerment exercises; the promotion of socially-responsible investment against the priority for funds' performance maximisation and the where, when and how of shareholder activism. The magazine will also seek to provide a public forum for communication between fund managers and trustees. It will not shirk from controversy in doing so."

Highlights of the first issue are a comprehensive Q&A with Finance Minister, Trevor Manuel, on the increasingly critical role of retirement-fund trustees; a controversial analysis of Black Economic Empowerment in the context of shareholder activism; and an in-depth look at the outspoken stance taken by trade union leaders over control of their members' savings.

Another feature of Today's Trustee is the introduction of "edutorials". These comprise educational material supplied by numerous financial institutions, and branded to them, to assist in the training of trustees.
