Gautrain route's final leg will boost passenger numbers

Gautrain operator Bombela spokesperson Errol Braithwaite told Engineering News Online that the company has started test-running of trains to Park station, in downtown Johannesburg, ahead of the opening of the final leg of the route next month.

Braithwaite added that that work to bring the water ingress in the tunnel linking the Rosebank and Park stations within the required specification has been completed.

Subcontractor Bombela Civils Joint Venture, which included Murray & Roberts, returned to the tunnel last year to fix the highly publicised water seepage problem. The opening of the remaining leg of the Gautrain route in May would add between 5% and 20% to the commuter service's current train passenger numbers of between 32 000 and 35 000 a day. Bombela was confident that the Park station route was on track to open in May, he concluded.
