Cote D'Ivoire to evaluate MTN licence

MTN's shares was down as much as 2% on Tuesday (7 May) after Ivory Coast's government named it as one of five companies that risked losing their operating licences because of poor levels of service.

The Ivorian government plans to ensure that the country's seven operators are at least 15% locally owned.

"Within six months the state regulator of the Ivory Coast will take stock of all commercial, technical and financial agreements with the seven operators‚" Information Technology and Communications Minister Bruno Kone said during a visit to telecommunications operator MTN in Abidjan.

MTN International holds 64.67% in the Ivorian subsidiary and the remaining 35.33% belongs to other unspecified shareholders.
