UCT to award honorary doctorates at ceremony

The University of Cape Town's mid-year graduation will take place at three ceremonies on 7 and 8 June 2012. Along with students who will receive their respective degrees at Jameson Hall, literary giant Zakes Mda and medical pioneer Professor David Sanders will receive honorary doctorates at the ceremony on Friday, 8 June.

Novelist, poet, playwright, painter, composer and filmmaker, Mda will give an acceptance speech after receiving his honorary doctorate in literature (DLitt). Mda has distinguished himself as a writer and continues to have a significant impact as a commentator and thought leader.

Professor Sanders will be awarded the Doctor of Science in Medicine. He is an iconic figure in the field of public health, nationally, regionally and internationally. His work has contributed to the understanding of primary health care as a framework for health and development, and to improvements in child health through research, teaching and training, and policy advocacy and service development.
