Indian market a 'huge attraction' for SA wine makers

Cape Town-based wine maker Wim Truter makes white wines for Distell, one of South Africa's leading spirit manufacturing companies, under the brand name Nederburg.

It is marketed in India by Aspri Spirits. Truter has been in the Indian capital of New Delhi, introducing Distell wines to foodies and chefs in a series of wine-tasting-and-dinner interactions, where, he told The Times of India, he used a combination of wines that pair well with Indian curries, light fish dishes and seafood.

"We are the oldest of the new world wines," Truter says. "Our wines have a fresh, fruity and upfront flavour that you find in the wines from the new world and yet a natural ripeness rendered to it by the balanced weather of South Africa." Arun Kumar of Aspri Spirits told The Times of India that the growing Indian market offers huge opportunities for foreign wine manufacturers. According to a rough estimate, India consumes 300,000 cases of imported wine annually, Kumar said.
