TV documentary exposes job seekers to career opportunities

For most school-leavers, the world of work is hard to get into. iSpani, a new SABC TV programme, is a reality documentary that takes viewers into the world of work and shares the many types of employment and career plans available. Unemployed viewers trying to get onto the job market are exposed to a variety of career opportunities, looking at multiple industries with employment potential for those starting out.

Each week an aspiring careerist is exposed to the inner workings of a specific career starting at the very bottom. They are taken on a process of orientation and practical job shadowing, introduced to and supported by potential employers. In addition to performing specific tasks that build the foundation of a competent employee, iSpani candidates are coached by on-the-ground experts in the field, who share their experiences in developing their own careers with the candidates.

Sink or swim

The candidates take us into their homes, share what their life is like and what being exposed to their chosen career would mean to them, their family and their situation. Once the candidate has some shadowing experience and been coached with professional and personal skills, they are tasked with carrying out the functions they have shadowed. For many this is the real test; they have to sink or swim, some will find employment, some will change their career goals, but all will leave the show, with a deeper understanding of their chosen career and how to go about finding a position that will be more than just a job.

Employers give an inside view

To support candidates on the show and viewers at home gain detailed insight into the industries, jobs and career paths potential employers share an inside view of each specific market, while the iSpani career coach and life skills professionals add the finishing touches to presenting a fully informed, committed work seeker to potential employers. Employers know what they are looking for and this is an excellent chance for work seekers to ensure they are chasing an achievable dream that suits their personal requirements.

The 26 episodes of 48 minutes of iSpani, produced for SABC Education by Blue Wizard Productions is scheduled for broadcast on SABC1 on Wednesdays at 1:30pm starting on 27 June, 2012. Mac Leshomo, dancer and singer best known for hosting Turn It Out is presenter of the programme.
