South Africa: KZN shines spotlight on green economy

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) reports that the KwaZulu-Natal government has intensified its drive to become a leading creative force in the creation of a green-economy.

The provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism, who hosted its first Green Economy Research Conference at the Durban ICC, aims to exploring opportunities to upscale economic activities that promote sustainability while protecting the environment. The KZN Planning Commission's Frikkie Brooks said the province had put in place the 2030 growth and development strategy plan in order to achieve certain green economy goals such as job creation, environment sustainability and human and community development.

Now that the developed world was exploring technology and other areas for a green economy, Brooks said, South Africa could not be left behind. He added that the country had the potential to come up with solutions that could also assist other African countries. Independent power producers (IPPs), Brooks said, could help alleviate power outages but were hindered from doing so because of existing governance and policy framework. However, government's plans to source energy from IPPs are now underway.
