Tomorrow sees Canvas launch in Cape Town

The first Canvas launch will feature footwear, sculpture and film, bringing the Ndebele to the space and mixing it with music from Oumou Sangare to Ninja Tunes, footsteps and jigs with contrasting shape shifters on the dance floor, moving from the corporate conservative to the relentless creative. Based in Cape Town, the launch will take place on Saturday 27 February 2010 at the Misael Space in Bree Street.

Its first collection uses footwear as the medium for the matter, where each piece is handmade to order, and limited in edition with 1-5 pairs available for each style and 25 styles across the collection. The show is both an autumn and a winter collection to suit both international and local markets.

Its concept is all about collaboration as it brings together artists, artisans and craft workers all around Africa to create and inspire each collection through tribes, politics and the reality of an Africa influenced by the a European aesthetic, as it sits alongside the traditional expression of the native African.

Footwear to surprise sculptures; animated by the spirit of the people that are Canvas; nestle inside the shoe, the wooden box is topped in Perspex or take-home tubular packaging. Jewellery is cast in the spirit of the brand with more jewellery inspired by the Ndebele.

The website, www.thecanvasconcept.com, will preview the collection, the night before launch on 26 February 2010.
