Smoke-damaged clothes for charity

The Exact clothing store, which was affected last month by a devastating fire in Port Elizabeth‘s central business district, on Thursday donated hundreds of clothing items to charity.

The store was one of several threatened by the fire in the old Greatermans building in Kemp Street off Govan Mbeki Avenue.

With the help of transport company Value, the items, largely for women, were donated to two charity homes, the Mother of Hope Centre for abused women and children, and the Haven of Hope for the desolate in Central, by Exact store manager Sharifa du Toit and Walmer Methodist Church charity co-ordinator Charmaine Lisher.

“A massive thank you from us,” said Haven of Hope administrator John Payne.

Mother of Hope Centre management chairman Peggy Nicolas said: “I commend them for what they've done.”

Lisher said a group from her church had been asked by the shop to assist on 5 September, and had collected and put together the clothes before Value came to fetch them.

Lotus Dry Cleaners and Launderers workers were asked to put in extra hours to restore smoke-affected items for use. The process cost about R6000.

Du Toit estimated the value of the clothes at R34000.

Value sales manager Alan Marshall said being part of a beneficial project was worthwhile.
