Spar customers show up in the fight against malnutrition
With a backdrop of malnourishment due to poverty, 660 Spar stores across the country launched their One 4 You, One 4 Me campaign during National Nutrition Week.
The campaign encouraged customers to purchase any two Spar Mageu 1 litre products for just R22, and then to pop one carton into the trolley at the front of every store. Once the campaign closed, all stores gave the donated stock to their local charities in need.
Combatting malnutrition
Bhavna Sanker, Spar brand promotions and advertising manager says that they chose to get behind the mission of Operation Hunger, ‘to create partnerships between vulnerable households and caring people to combat the malnutrition which, when suffered by children, undermines the nation’s health, education and economic potential’, as it is so closely aligned with the culture of Spar.
“Spar has a culture of caring - we’re not in the grocery business, we’re in the people business. We are part of the community and for us, the community is like family. We love going the extra mile to give our family the best.”
She adds that Spar selected Spar Mageu (a ready-to-drink maize beverage/porridge) as the product for this campaign as, quite simply, it’s a ready-to-drink maize beverage or drinkable porridge that’s versatile, as it can be enjoyed at room temperature or chilled and contains a variety of minerals (electrolytic iron and zinc oxide) and vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, B6 and B9). It is also very low in sodium, with no artificial sweeteners and a good source of energy.”
Sandy Bukula, interim CEO at Operation Hunger, says “The R86 287.50 donation from SPAR Mageu Campaign to Operation Hunger will go a long way to improving access to healthy diets and quality nutritional care in the lives of 430 families.
“On behalf of our beneficiaries, we’d like to thank the SPAR Group for their continued support of Operation Hunger’s efforts to combat malnutrition and food insecurity as part of our #FeedAFamily Campaign.”
