"In discussion with many of our staff and customers, I have decided that the most positive and fitting contribution that the company can make is to donate all profits that we make from sales in our stores on Sunday - the day of his funeral - to charitable causes that would honour his memory," said Brasher.

"All of South Africa is united in wanting to honour Nelson Mandela's extraordinary life and legacy, not just in this the week following his passing, but in the time to come. In this tremendously diverse nation, people are choosing many different ways to reflect, pay their respects and decide what their contribution will be to upholding his legacy.

"I considered closing our stores on Sunday, the day of the funeral. However, many staff and customers wanted us to do more - to honour Mandela's legacy in a more practical and tangible way that will benefit people's lives. We are proud that we have found a way to do so.

"It is entirely understandable that some staff may wish not to work on Sunday. I respect that choice, and they will be entirely free to choose not to work. On Sunday, the stores will be manned only by staff that have chosen to volunteer to work.

"Indeed, many of our staff tell me that they welcome our 'Day for Madiba' because it enables them to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy while also working and earning for their families. Similarly, our many customers who rely on us to be open on Sunday will be able to shop with us knowing that every purchase will benefit a good cause.

"Our staff are excited about this initiative. With their help and with the support of our customers, the 'Day for Madiba' will be a fitting way to contribute to the enduring legacy of a truly great man," concludes Brasher.
