Nestle halts baby product in Chile after health scare

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND: Swiss food giant Nestle said that it had stopped sales of a fruit-based baby product in Chile after "traces of pesticides" were found by a local consumer group.

"After analysis of the products and its raw materials mentioned in the NGO (non governmental organisation) study, the Chilean Public Health Institute confirmed that these products are absolutely safe for consumption," the food group said.

"However, in order to reduce confusion and bring all stakeholders together to study the traceability in the supply chain of raw materials, the company has decided to stop selling one of the concerned products until completion of the study," it added in a statement.

The group said that "the traces detected are well below internationally accepted levels."

Nestle did not name the product or give any other details.
