Training OTC dispensers

The Adcock Ingram's OTC (Over the Counter) Academy of Learning is ready for its 2010 intake of pharmacists and assistants. All delegates who achieve over 90% are entered into a draw and the lucky winners each receive a bursary to study for their Pharmacist's Assistant's qualification, valued at R7100 each

Marjolein Bench of Adcock Ingram says the OTC Academy of Learning aims to provide training at no charge to delegates on issues covering a wide range of common medical ailments with advice on the best remedies available without incurring extra costs associated with a doctor's visit. Its independent pharmacists have trained more than 12 000 pharmacy personnel in the detection and treatment of various common diseases and disorders and their related medications.

"For many people, the pharmacist is the first port of call when faced with illnesses such as colds and flu or to stop pain," she says. "Considering the range of medication options available that do not require a prescription, the training courses equip them with the knowledge that ensures customers receive the best OTC advice possible.

"In addition to the more common medical matters, the training sessions have also covered ophthalmology, gastro and related ailments as well as diet and a lack of energy. Looking ahead, we aim to cover ear, nose and throat conditions, HIV and Aids, dermatology and skin conditions, sexual health and gynaecological conditions, mental health as well as cardiovascular health," she concludes.
