Apple of their eye

Apple's long awaited iPad has hit our shores, thanks to an enterprising Internet retailer (Have2Have.co.za) which began importing them directly from the US earlier this month.

Apple is known for its sleek hardware design, paired with beautiful software, and the glossy styling of the iPad does not disappoint.

It is not hard to see why this is the ultimate accessory for tech savvy fashionistas at the moment. There is such demand that Apple has had to delay the international roll-out simply to service US orders.

The iPad is a tablet PC — using a super responsive touch pad to control all functions. It is aimed at people who want rich media and Internet connectivity at their fingertips, no matter where they drink their low-fat soy milk decaf lattes. Using WiFi or now 3G technology, you can surf the Net, buy iTunes, watch YouTube videos or download “Apps” (applications such as games) to amuse yourself.

It also works as a full-colour e-reader, though the backlit display means you may find long hours of reading hard on the eyes.

Its video playback display is simply stunning, and its top feature in my opinion, especially when flipped on its side for wide-angle viewing.

What it lacks, however, is capacity for accessories. There are no USB ports to plug in your mouse, webcam or flash drive, and many feel this is a major failing. Some say it's like a large iPhone without the phone.

The touch keyboard will also take some adjusting, but the predictive text and auto-correct work well.

If you must have the best gadget first, and thrive on the attention you'll get when you use it in public, you will love the iPad. On the other hand, if you need to get some serious work done, this is never going to be your primary machine.
