Massmart 52-week sales up

Massmart Holdings reported on Wednesday, 8 July 2009, that total sales for the 52-week period to June 28 2009 increased to R43.1 billion, a growth of 10.4% over the prior year's 52-week period, with inflation estimated at 11.4%.

Comparable store sales increased by 8.2%, and comparing the 2009 52-week period to the previous year's reported 53-week period however, showed total sales growth of 8.4%, Massmart said.

Divisional total sales growth for the 52-week period (comparable sales are shown in brackets) compared with the 2008 52-week period were as follows:

  • Massdiscounters increased by 10.6% (8.9%) with inflation of 6.6%;
  • Masswarehouse increased by 12.0% (10.0%) with inflation of 13.4%;
  • Massbuild increased by 0.7% (-3.7%) with inflation of 11.4%; and
  • Masscash increased by 13.9% (11.6%) with inflation of 14.0%.

In Masscash the change to the BATSA cigarette wholesaling model reduced total sales growth in that division for the current 52-week period by approximately 4.9%.

For the same reason, group total and comparable sales growths were reduced by approximately 1.4% each, the group said.

Massmart said its reviewed preliminary results for the financial year to June would be published on 27 August 2009.
