Continuing Professional Development for PROs

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a global trend and PRISA - the Institute for Public Relations and Communication Management - has been running a pilot project for the past two years.

Like any other growing profession, public relations and communication management is fiercely competitive. Practitioners need to retain their own competitive advantage and always exceed the highest expectations of clients and employers. The priority of CPD is to achieve improved practice, while at the same time being of benefit to developing public relations and communication practitioners at all levels.

CPD for the profession will be officially launched by the Services SETA Business Chamber manager, Natalie Rathbone, at the PRISA National AGM and Conference to be held at the Blue Lagoon Hotel, Nahoon Beach, East London from May 23 -25, this year. The conference will be addressing "Public Relations and Communication in a New Context".

Margaret Moscardi, executive director at PRISA says, "CPD will encourage the concept of lifelong learning and targets should not be difficult to obtain. It includes education and training, personal development and professional practice. Activities are divided into categories to ensure development of young practitioners and a contribution to the profession by more experienced practitioners. In other words, junior practitioners take the knowledge and senior practitioners impart the knowledge.

"The profession needs to comply with global trends and provide mobility for its practitioners through CPD," she concluded.
