‘Do you take...?'

Edgy, experimental and ingenious - radio's ultimate reality show kicks off as Kaya FM 95.9 and Castle Lite launch 2 Strangers and a Wedding.

It is a social experiment, a cultural challenge that will take South Africans by surprise and the biggest event on radio this year. 2 Strangers and a Wedding is being broadcast daily on Phat Joe's Breakfast Show. Over eight weeks, two strangers are set to meet, wed and live happily ever after - that is, if it is the right decision, according to them.

“It is edgy, exciting and nothing like this has been done on radio in South Africa before,” says Castle Lite brand manager Shawn Katz. “The show takes one of life's largest personal decisions, condenses it into an eight-week courtship and will take listeners along for an interesting journey of emotions and decision making. For the brand, it is all about making the right choice - and through 2 Strangers and a Wedding; well, nothing communicates this more than making one of life's biggest choices.”

The journey starts with dozens of interviews taking place from hundreds of applicants. After a series of personality tests and in-depth interviews with the panel of experts and a vote by Kaya FM listeners, one groom will be chosen. The female applicants will follow the same process until five prospective brides are chosen. Five male and five female finalists will be chosen and, through a process of elimination, a single couple will face the decision of exchanging vows in 23 May.

“An army of experts was recruited to assist in the decision-making process,” says Katz, “and will be on standby for all finalists to assist them in making the right choices. These include attorneys, counsellors and, of course, the listeners.”

The show may verge on the controversial, but Katz says that in the 21st century and at the pace we live, it is not uncommon to be faced with pressured decision-making about many important aspects of our lives. “Apart from the fact that the show will no doubt gather an instant following as its premium radio entertainment, there is also the social and individual message to take heed of. Making the right choice and understanding the impact that it would have on the rest of our lives. At this point, we may not even see a wedding as the finalists may decide to part ways at the altar. But, that would be the right decision for them”.
