Packaging New business South Africa

Plastic has many lives

Tuffy manufactures all its black refuse bags from recycled material and even the master batch is recycled, says marketing manager Rory Murray.

“We are the only black refuse bag on the market that can make that claim.”

The bags are made from a blend of pre- and post-consumer waste. Tuffy runs 500 tons of material through its plant every month, equating to 18 million refuse bags.

The company's extrusion and bag-making facility is in Cape Town, as is its recycling plant. To complement its production of raw material Tuffy buys recycled chip.

Murray says one of the benefits of plastic is its recycle ability — the raw material has many lives.

“Our bags may have been bottles, crates or other bags in a previous life. There is a huge industry in SA that collects, sorts, cleans and processes waste plastic.”

Tuffy has been around for 20 years, having pioneered refuse bags on a roll in SA.

“The quality of our product, which is dependent on the thickness of the bag, the blend of materials used and the roll geometry, has always been a driving force of the Tuffy brand.

“We are known for our ability to innovate and were the first company to launch refuse bags with a fragrance.”

Although Tuffy has the technology to produce a fully biodegradable and compostable bag, Murray says the cost would be 10 times that of current recycled refuse bags.
