Packaging Company news South Africa

A national PET footprint

Mpact's plastic division comprises business clusters serving various markets through the use of diverse technologies and raw materials. One such material is PET (Polyethylene terephthalate). PET is converted by means of either a single- or two-stage ISBM process (injection stretch blow moulding). To see how we produce products using single- and two-stage blow moulding technologies, kindly visit Mpact Plastics website on www.mpact.co.za or click here.

At Mpact, we specialise in producing a range of PET products, using both two- and single-stage ISBM processes, at three of our eight operations. This national footprint favourably positions Mpact to offer our customers cost-effective FMCG products with satisfactory lead times.

The PET producing factories situated in Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal and Western Cape supply a range of generic and branded PET FMCG products to small, medium, and multi-national customers. These products include, but are not limited to, preforms, medical round bottles, juice, wine and spirits bottles, hotfill PET bottles, herb and spice containers and a range of spreads and condiment jars with accompanying closures.

Extensive product offering

Mpact Plastics produces a range of high clarity PET medical round bottles aimed at the pharmaceutical industry. Available in sizes 50ml, 100ml and 200ml, the product range covers a holistic offering for specific market needs. Three closure options are available, all taking functional and cost requirements into account. The snap-on /3 and 28mm 1810 closures offer a tamper-evident and cost-effective solution, while the childproof closure has an added safety benefit.

The herb and spice containers, together with locally produced grinders offer users a safe and cost-effective alternative with the same aesthetic appeal as glass, the current market alternative. Ideally positioned for both home use and the hospitality industry, these containers are becoming the preferred option amongst users due to safety and durability. The spice containers are available in various sizes ranging from 100ml to 325ml. Mpact has also showcased innovation capabilities by producing a PET spice container where the grinder forms part of the PET container itself, instead of being incorporated into a two piece grinding closure. This resulted in
using a one-piece grinding closure that significantly reduces the cost of the combined product offering.

PET as an alternative for glass condiment jars and bottles, such as tomato sauce, syrup, mayonnaise and peanut butter is continually growing. With barrier properties such as an oxygen scavenger and reduced filling risks due to fewer breakages, more brand owners are converting to PET. Further benefits include lightweighting and safer user experiences at home and public arenas.

Ice tea bottles are specialised due to the hot filling process. Hot filling allows for the exclusion of preservatives and results in an extended shelf life. Mpact offers hotfill technology as a suitable packaging medium for products with these requirements. Hotfill bottles, together with closures, are available in various sizes, ranging from 300ml to 2l, in order to offer brand owners a holistic on-shelf offering. An extensive range of PET products for fruit juice, RTD (ready to drink) products and carbonated soft drinks are also available, together with suitable closures.

Expanding a new market

PET is also gaining popularity in the chemical market and is suited for packing most chemicals, including but not limited to automotive applications, detergents, diesel-based products, mineral and motor oils and spirits, paraffin and turpentine based products. Mpact’s decorating capability for chemical-filled PET bottles includes direct print of up to six colours as well as applying a self-adhesive label. Bottle sizes that can be printed range from 20mm diameter to 125mm diameter for round bottles with a minimum height of 40mm and a maximum height of 320mm. Elliptical bottles with a diameter of between 25mm and 250mm with a minimum height of 40mm and a maximum height of 320mm can also be printed at the Mpact Pinetown facility.

Driving sustainability through sound decision-making

To further drive both the cost and environmental benefits of PET as a suitable alternative, Mpact also uses Savuka rPET, locally produced by Mpact Polymers. Savuka, meaning “revival” in Zulu, enjoys the highest internationally recognised standards and Mpact Polymers is the first plant in Africa to meet the Coca-Cola Company’s full certification for PET bottles to package soft drinks. Strategically situated in Gauteng, in close proximity to our largest PET converting plant, we ensure ongoing benefits to customers and consumers. Savuka complies with the European Union’s Food Safety Authority specifications.

In addition to the use of Savuka rPET in products, Mpact’s value proposition is further driven by making sound decisions when acquiring assets. Mpact owns a range of generic injection moulds to produce preforms that can be blown into customised bottles. This limits the investment required by the customer for proprietary product designs. This partial project investment by Mpact encourages customised products, allows our customers to capitalise on investments previously made by Mpact and assists them in building reputable retail brands.
