After obtaining his B.Eng. and MBA at the University of Pretoria, Viljoen worked as a management consultant in logistics, supply chain and organisation development. In 1994, he joined Gilbey's in Johannesburg as manager of industrial engineering for Africa. A few years later, he joined Coca-Cola in the UAE, as plant manager before working in China and Vietnam as plant manager and technical director. He joined KFC as director of supply chain management in 2005 and was chief operating officer there for the past four years.
