Gauteng architectural photo competition

Continuum Architects and WesBank are giving photographers the opportunity to capture a unique view of the new home of WesBank in Fairland, billed as one of South Africa's architectural masterpieces, as part of a photography competition.

Photographers can either shoot this landmark from strategic vantage points in the vicinity or register to work from the grounds on selected days during January and February. The closing date for the Continuum WesBank Photography Competition is Friday, 20 February 2009.

The winning photographer will snap up a trip for two to Barcelona (including flights and accommodation), one of the world's greatest architectural showcases. Ten runners up will each take home R1500.

For Continuum Architects, which brought together some of the country's foremost architectural practices to create the new home of WesBank, photography and design are integrally linked. It is asking photographers to focus on the essence of the design that is supposed to seamlessly bring together dynamic African concepts and the texture of SA's economic infrastructure.

Fairland's exterior evokes the earthy colours of Africa through green glazing and earthy paint finishes. Vertical sunscreens, adorned with potato prints, are a prominent feature along the eight facades of the building in grey, green, yellow and red. The ‘iconic' structure is intended to complete overturn the stereotypical image of banks.

The panel of judges includes Mike Pawley, a specialist in architectural photography who was Continuum Architect's professional photographer for the Fairland building; Michael Doran, reputedly one of SA's most talented stills photographers; and Doreen Pfeiffer, who specialises in producing black and white artworks for the residential and commercial market.
