Production talent faces the music

Five senior students studying multimedia at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have had their work selected and accepted into the M-Net EDiT Competition 2008 in the music video category.

This local television online competition is offered in partnership with industry-oriented educational institutions and professional associations, where online users and peers can vote and award prizes in recognition of outstanding creative talent.

The selected submissions feature a combination of techniques, including live video, compositing and experimental processing of footage. The submissions are:

  • Sanele Makhubu' video for the song K'dala S'gudla featuring Lungisa by Amabhubesi,
  • O'Brien Manana and Loyiso Mkungela for the video of the song Headbanger HiHop by Reasoning,
  • Greg Groothedde and Moeketsi Moahloli for the video of the song Revolutions by Groundstar

Last year, the students' lecturer, Mocke van Veuren, walked away with the laurels in the experimental short-film category in the same competition. His submission Minutes, in which he partnered with Theresa Collins, is part of an ongoing project that uses time-lapse photography to explore the daily cycles and rhythms of urban life in Johannesburg. This project has been exhibited or screened at various local and international events, including the Ninth Havana Biennale and the 10th Venice Architectural Biennale.

“The students are competing against professionals who are already in the industry, and the competition is tough. To be selected and accepted into the competition is already an achievement on its own,” says Van Veuren. “I believe that the students have what it takes to succeed in the competition and they have the potential to follow in the footsteps of Ms Keegan Murray, a Multimedia graduate of the UJ, who was announced as the winner in the music video category of the M-Net EDiT Competition 2007.”

The students' music videos can be viewed on www.mnet.co.za/edit and votes can be cast once a day per category.
