Cape Film Office under investigation

The Cape Film Office was shut down last week after a raid by the police and the city council's internal audit staff looking into claims of financial irregularities.

The film office issues paid-for permits for the shooting of films, advertisements and stills photographic shoots. Documentation and computers to be used in the investigation were removed from the office in the civic centre.

The head of the film office, Malcolm Calderwood, said that he didn't know the details of the investigation. The office, he said, would be closed until further notice.

The Cape film industry is estimated to be worth about R2-billion a year. More than 4000 permits were issued last year.

The issuing of permits will now be undertaken by the Cape Film Commission.
