Most impatient gift wrappers, unwrappers

In the spirit of the festive season, TomTom has released statistics on the unwrapping habits of nations from around the globe. South Africans are said to be impatient with 64% confessing to opening their gifts earlier than they should.

The global Wrapping Report research was conducted in partnership with YouGov in the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Australia, Spain, US, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Brazil.

The results reveal that almost a third of men (30%) admit to ripping the paper off a present they receive in ten seconds or less. This compares to 22% of women who identify themselves as "Speedy unwrappers" and 41% of women who admit they are "Careful unwrappers," slowing taking the paper off to recycle for future use. The majority of respondents who celebrate Christmas will wrap their presents from 15-21 December and women will be doing most of the work.

According to the TomTom report, men are just as speedy when it comes to wrapping presents. Globally, 47% of men admit they are basic wrappers and spend one minute or less on wrapping a present. In contrast, 67% of women say they do more than basic wrapping and 24% spend more than three minutes trying and make their gifts look 'as festive as possible'. Women will do the majority of the wrapping this season, whilst over a third (34%) of men will wrap just five presents or less.

When it comes to taking a sneaky peak at presents, 45% of people globally admit to opening presents early. Around the globe, patience levels vary; 57% of Canadians, 59% of Brazilians and 64% of South Africans confess to opening gifts earlier than they should. In contrast, 40% of Brits and only 30% of Germans, 33% of Belgians and 25% of Dutch people admit to being unable to wait.

Unwrapping competition

"At TomTom we are getting into the present wrapping spirit by inviting people around the world to unwrap and win," said Corinne Vigreux, MD, TomTom Consumer. "We recently launched a competition giving people the chance to 'Unwrap the World' to win one of six driving adventures. And as part of this unwrapping extravaganza, we are holding the first present unwrapping finals to find the fastest present unwrapper in Europe."

'TomTom Gives You More' is an online competition that gives people the chance to 'unwrap the world'. Players put their virtual unwrapping skills to the test to win a main prize plus thousands of other prizes.
