January income from food, beverages industry up 5.1%

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry rose 5.1% to R3.573 billion in January 2012, from a year earlier, according to Statistics SA data.

The main contributors were catering services at 16.0% and contributing 2.3 percentage points, followed by takeaway and fast-food outlets at 6.7% and contributing 2.0 percentage points and restaurants and coffee shops with 1.5% and contributing 0.8 of a percentage point, the data showed.

The total income generated for the three months ended January 2012 rose by 5.7% to R11.979 billion compared with the previous corresponding period.

The main contributor to this increase was takeaway and fast-food outlets at 11.9% and contributing 3.4 percentage points, followed by restaurants and coffee shops at 2.9% and contributing 1.6 percentage points.
