Food and beverages industry income up 0.4%

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry for May was 0.4% higher than May 2010, Statistics SA said on Monday, 25 July 2011.

The increase in food sales (1.0% and contributing 0.9 of a percentage point) was counteracted by a decrease in other income (-19.9% and contributing -0.5 of a percentage point).

The annual positive growth rate of 0.4% in total income for May was mainly driven by takeaway and fast-food outlets (4.0% and contributing 1.1 percentage points). This increase was to a large extent counteracted by the decrease recorded for caterers (-6.1% and contributing -1.0 percentage point).

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry for the three months to May increased by 5.9% compared with the three months to May 2010. The main contributor to this increase was food sales (6.7% and contributing 5.9 percentage points).

The year-on-year increase of 5.9% in total income for the three months to May was driven by takeaway and fast-food outlets (12.7% and contributing 3.4 percentage points) and restaurants and coffee shops (5.3% and contributing 2.8 percentage points).
